Shamira Raphaëla’s funny and life-affirming documentary follows the titular Shabu, a 14-year-old Dutch-Surinamese rapper as he tries to forge a future in the music industry.
The only trouble is, he gets in the doghouse with his gran after stealing and writing off her car while she’s on holiday. This leaves Shabu taking on every odd job he can to try and stump up the cash before she comes home. Knowing he’s in too deep and as a last-ditch attempt, he instead decides to throw a block party and charge on the door.
Although a part of us wants Shabu to get off scot-free and find fame, another part loves to see a gran handing out a (verbal) whuppin’! There’s only one way to find out which way it goes.
